In 1961 Canon released their first series of 35mm automatic exposure rangefinder cameras, the Canonet series.
Because of the succes of the Canon Canonet, Canon continued to expand the series and produced a total of 18 different models. The Canonet series cameras are considered to be the reason of Canon's worldwide fame.
Fun fact: On the day of the launch in 1961, Canonet units stocked for sale at Mitsukoshi's Nihonbashi department store in central Tokyo sold out in two hours.
