The Nikon Nikkormat FT3 was launched in the late 70's. It was the first Nikon camera to use AI (Automatic Indexing) lenses, a significant change for Nikon whom where always using different solutions until then. AI was a new system for coupling the lens to the camera's exposure system which provided better automation. Although the change of the lenses the Nikon Nikkormat FT3 could still be fitted with non-AI lenses due to the metering coupling lever being able to be disengaged.
